Jin Shin Jyutsu is a universal art of harmonising the energy in the body by using the fingers and hands over clothing. It is a dynamic touch therapy that works with 144,000 energy functions in the body. It was rediscovered in Japan in the early 1900s by Master Jiro Murai and was brought to the West in the 1950s by Mary Burmeister, a Japanese-American.

Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced ‘jitsu’) uses a system of 26 ‘energy sites’ to unlock the natural energy of the mind and body, thereby eliminating fatigue and stress, relieving pain, releasing muscle tension, and promoting mental alertness and calm. It is often described as ‘acupuncture with the fingers’.

Because it is gentle, it is safe for children, pregnant mothers, the elderly and infirm. It is also a great support for people on medication and those undergoing cancer or other treatments.

A deeply relaxing and comforting treatment, Jin Shin Jyutsu can be applied by a trained practitioner and as self-help, which is easy to learn and can be used as maintenance between sessions.

The sessions normally last an hour.

What to expect

During a session, the client lies on a comfortable mattress, face up and fully clothed. After listening to the pulses, the practitioner applies light touch on the client’s body using the system of 26 ‘energy sites’.

Two sites are held simultaneously until the tension or congestion is released, then one hand is moved to another site and along areas of the body where there is tension. The specific sequences used are called ‘flows’.

Each site can take seconds to minutes to release and re-energise.

Treatments last about 45 minutes, with a short period for rest and teaching of self-help.

The treatment is a pleasurable experience, generally one of deep relaxation, and the benefits are usually felt immediately. Moreover, the treatment continues for a further 24-hour cycle after the session, gently cleaning, correcting and regenerating energies.

Even after one treatment clients report that they feel ‘easier’, ‘calmer’ and ‘revitalised’.

Jin Shin Jyutsu relaxes, repairs, cleans and regenerates the whole being. It facilitates the body’s own healing ability at the cause level, promoting a general sense of health and wellbeing.

It is particularly helpful to:

  • Relieve mental and physical fatigue
  • Manage pain (physical, mental, emotional)
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Boost the immune system / lymphatics
  • Balance emotions / reduce anxiety
  • Promote mental alertness / productivity
  • Improve circulation / reduce swelling
  • Improve mobility / reduce stiffness
  • Ease stress related conditions (headaches, migraines, IBS, RSI, etc.)
  • Improve digestion / elimination
  • Ease menstrual / menopausal discomforts
  • Detoxify the body
  • Speed up recovery after surgery / illness
  • Support when undergoing cancer and other medical treatments
  • Promote a general sense of health and wellbeing

Our therapist at Equilibrium is Astrid Kauffmann, BSc, TIDHA, MFHT
Dip. Holistic Aromatherapy, Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner and Self-Help Teacher since 2001; Member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists.

“I started my journey in complementary therapies in 1997 after a successful career in advertising. I began by studying the physical body and received my Diploma in Holistic Aromatherapy from the Tisserand Institute (TIDHA) in London in 1999. Around that time, I had a profound experience and I became fascinated with the energy in the body. I explored various modalities but felt that something was missing. Then I discovered a Universal Art called Jin Shin Jyutsu, a hands-on therapy that can be applied by a trained practitioner and also learnt as self-help. At the time, I suffered from debilitating migraines. I was amazed that with some self-help exercises I was able to manage, and then clear them.
I became a fully trained Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner in 2000 and have been teaching self-help classes since 2001. Over the years I have attended many Jin Shin Jyutsu seminars and advanced classes. I live in Wiltshire, where I offer treatments, talks and self-help classes and I have a website, flowsforlife.com, where I share information and self-help exercises.”

I’ve had two sessions with Astrid and they were both wonderful. Her magical hands allow me to drift into deep relaxation and when I leave I feel so calm but also energised. Highly recommend. L.W. – Woodborough, Wiltshire
I realised I was out of balance; my sleep was erratic and I felt like I was burning out. After one session with Astrid I felt reinvigorated and had the best night’s sleep I’d had in ages. Since our session I have also used a number of her wonderful self-help techniques. I highly recommend Astrid and shall be booking a further ‘maintenance’ session soon. J.S. – Marlborough, Wiltshire
I went to see Astrid a few weeks ago. She has magic hands. The fog lifted, I can’t put my finger on the feeling. I went to an interview that week, felt calm and confident and got the job. Thank you! E.T. – Marlborough, Wiltshire
